A devil, a drag queen and a pink alien were among the colourful crowd that assembled in east Sydney's Darlinghurst on Saturday afternoon before the pilgrims' march towards Randwick Racecourse, where the Pope held mass for an estimated 400,000 people. Pope a homophobe: A protester's T-Shirt message The NoToPope Coalition of around 2,000 people were opposing Pope Benedict XVI's stand against condoms, homosexuality and abortion. Many wore shirts emblazoned with slogans including "Bless me father for I am homo", "Thank God I'm an atheist" and "If God hates fags then I hate God". "We did it, we made it here," NoToPope Coalition spokeswoman Rachel Evans told The Age newspaper. "We're really happy with the turnout. I'm especially happy with all the gorgeous T-shirts and placards showing gay pride is alive." The coalition had won the right to "annoy" World Youth Day (WYD) pilgrims in a court battle earlier this week. The Federal Court struck out the section of the clause in WYD regulations that made it illegal to "annoy" participants, punishable by a AUS$5,500 fine. A total of 6,000 condoms, coloured red to promote HIV awareness, were offered to WYD pilgrims during the protest march. One pilgrim was arrested after he became angry about condoms being thrown at him, but the protest was mostly good-natured, with several pilgrims saying they would pray for the protesters, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.
