Tue 8 Jul 2008 In: New Zealand Daily News

K' Road's Family bar was busy with wigged and frocked divas on Sunday night competing for the prize of a trip to Sydney on next February's Pink Flight to Mardi Gras. Wigged winner: Miss Ribena (left) congratulates Cheery Box The So You Think You Can Drag competition's heats had taken place over several Thursday nights, with Sunday's final featuring the best of the best. Cara Panties, Tiffany Rose, Ribena, Buckwheat and special guests Candy Box from Stonewall on Sydney's Oxford Street and Daniel Scott from the Priscilla, Queen of the Desert stage show. Young drag artiste Cherry Box won the grand prize in a close contest. "The night was an absolute stunning success," says GayNZ.com photographer Hamish Turnball. "The shows kicked off at around 8:30pm with fabulous performances, drinks and outfits galore. "Cherry Box stole the show with her fierce camp shows that wowed the audiences and the panel judges. Then it was all over and everyone was safely tucked in bed - no pun intended - by midnight. "The fan-tabulous night could not have happened without the friends and family of the LGBT community so a big thank you to everyone who came to support their drag sistas!" According to Family bar's event organiser Miss Ribena, a new drag competition is coming up in a few months time, based on new Abba movie Mamma Mia. The heats for Mr. Gay Auckland 2008 are also coming up in future weeks – ask at the bar for entry details.
