The first 'Fag-Tag' event last night at The Paddington bar in Auckland's Parnell attracted two dozen gay guys and their friends for quiet drinks – with the organiser pleased with the turnout and hoping to build numbers for further Fag-Tags in New Zealand. Mike Sanford (above centre) with his Fag-Taggers last night in Parnell The idea of 'Fag-Tagging' a straight bar and attracting gay clientele on a Sunday afternoon has been popular in Sydney for the last four years – with the most popular event - hosted at the Sydney Opera House - attracting 2,500 people. Fag Tag NZ organiser Mike Sanford is hoping Aucklanders will catch on to the idea, and hasn't ruled out Fag-Tagging bars in other cities if the demand is there. "We're aiming to hold them every month, and a flight from Sydney to Queenstown at the end of August for Gay Ski Week has also been Fag-Tagged," says Sanford, who will announce future event details shortly.
