Jamaica:70% say gays shouldn't have rights

Sun 22 Jun 2008 In: International News View at Wayback

A public opinion poll of Jamaican citizens has found that 70% do not believe gays and lesbians should have any civil rights. The Jamaican Gleaner newspaper poll, released last week, found women slightly more receptive than men to repealing the country's law against 'sodomy' or giving gays protection from discrimination in housing or work. 34% of women would support pro-gay legislation, while only 20% of men would. Jamaica has been described by human rights groups as having the worst record of any country in the New World in its treatment of gays and lesbians. Jamaican gays, supported by international human rights groups, have been calling for repeal of the sodomy law which carries a sentence of 10-years in prison on conviction.
