AKL: Kinky new leather contest for Urge bar

Sat 21 Jun 2008 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Contestants are wanted for a kinky new pageant in Auckland's all-male bear and leather bar - and the winner will earn a trip to this year's Melbourne Leather Pride. "This is a contest for anyone, any shape or size, who is lively, with a hint of kink about them," says Urge co-owner Alan Granville. Keen contestants should email the bar at urgebar@ihug.co.nz. The winner of the contest on Friday 11 July will receive return flights to Melbourne to compete at their Leather Pride pageant in September. Their Leather Pride Festival takes place each Spring, celebrating the wonders of leather over two weeks and three weekends of workshops, art, entertainment, sexual health workshops and parties. A group of bears have gone to Melbourne this weekend to compete in the annual Southern HiBearnation show tonight - Mr. Urge New Zealand Bear 2008 Heath Jones and Safe Sex Poster Boy Roger Moore are both in the competition. Meanwhile, Urge bar's popular Furry Friday nights are changing dates and adding a new venue - shifting from the second Friday of every month to the first Friday of the month, starting on 4 July. Each Furry Friday night will now start at nearby Kamo bar with drinks and nibbles from 7pm before moving onto Urge later. "The NZ Bears group has got off to a flying start and we want to attract more and more bears and admirers to it," says Granville. "We are also supporting new Kamo owners Loren and Ant in their venture together." NZ Bears have already held successful BBQ and dinner nights, with much more planned to come. Anyone interested in joining the group should email nzbears@xtra.co.nz.
