AKL: Fag-Tag events make straight bars gay

Fri 13 Jun 2008 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

An idea popular in Sydney - 'Fag-Tagging' a straight bar and making it gay on one Sunday afternoon - is coming to Auckland from next month. Mike Sanford, from the team that organises Gay Ski Week NZ, says the first New Zealand Fag-Tag event will happen at The Paddington bar in Parnell on Sunday 6 July from 4pm. "It's about getting together all of your friends - gay, lesbian, straight and all in between - and partying outside of your normal environment," explains Sanford. "Each time a different, traditionally straight, venue is chosen to be Fag Tagged based on its fun vibe, location music and atmosphere. The word is spread among friends to come and party the night away." The Fag-Tag idea started in Sydney four years ago, he says. "Once a month we pick off a straight pub/bar outside the gay ghetto and make it gay on a Sunday afternoon. "It was launched into Melbourne in May with 150 expected to turn up - and we got 300. So we think it's just what Auckland needs - something a bit different to the club circuit. It always blows me away how Fag-Tag brings people out of the woodwork, many who wouldn't be seen dead in a gay bar due to their jobs or what ever the reason. It's just a fun social Sunday afternoon drinks," Sanford says.
