Brazil: Openly-gay soldier goes AWOL

Fri 6 Jun 2008 In: International News View at Wayback

A Brazilian soldier who publicly flaunted his homosexuality has been detained by military police after his dramatic arrest on live television, according to reports. Sergeant Laci Marinho de Araujo was being transferred from Sao Paulo to Brasilia, where he would likely be jailed on desertion charges filed against him, his lawyer, Francisco Lucio Franca, told the news wesbite Globo. The newspaper said the arrested sergeant was suffering a litany of health and mental problems including depression, epilepsy, traumatic stress and multiple sclerosis. "They want to kill me!" it quoted Sgt De Araujo as saying as he was led away by the military police. Sgt De Araujo - who also featured this month with his lover on the cover of a top-selling news weekly that declared them the army's first openly gay couple - claims he was arrested on trumped-up charges and is really a victim of sexual discrimination.
