K' Rd: 2 revamped gay bars open in August

Thu 5 Jun 2008 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Auckland's gay bar czar Wayne Clark says he'll open two revamped K' Road gay venues in one night, with an exclusive invite-only "dual-opening party". Newly gay: K' Road's Crest Hotel Since it closed in April, the nightclub formally known as Supermarket, downstairs from Family bar at 270 K' Road, is in the process of a complete refit. An all-new bar area, chill-out seating booths, bathrooms, lighting and sound system will create a more upmarket feel, drawing ideas from trends in bar design around the world, explains Clark. "People won't recognise the club when it reopens, it's completely different and vastly improved," he tells GayNZ.com. Renamed Envy, the downstairs club will launch with an invite-only party on Friday 1 August, the same night as the Naval as an all-gay bar on the ground floor level, launching with a similar VIP event earlier that evening. In preparation, the venue will close for a week from 27 July, when Clark says he'll give the bar a makeover which will include installing several red glass chandeliers. The upstairs bar at 243 K 'Road, dubbed Purple, is currently host to Flirt fortnightly women's night, the Gay Auckland Business Association and Auckland Lesbian Business Association's meetings, a piano bar each Friday evening, and a regular gay night hosted by drag diva Tess Tickle. The opening of the extra gay venues has lead to speculation over the future of Family bar itself, but Clark assures GayNZ.com he has no plans to close the popular drag and karaoke venue. He says he'll also continue to make improvements to Family's interior in coming months.
