Gay weddings boost California business

Thu 5 Jun 2008 In: International News View at Wayback

California businesses are predicted to do a roaring trade on the back of the state's decision last month to allow same sex marriages. After June 17 Californians and anyone from any other US state will be able to legally marry in California and those in the wedding business, including planners and caterers, are reporting heavy bookings. One senior researcher, from the University of California, predicts the spending boost in coming months to be in the region of $NZ470 million. The only other US state to so far allow same sex marriages is Massachusetts, which legalised the unions in 2004. Ten states have appealed to the Californian Supreme Court to suspend the same sex marriages until a November referendum on the issue.
