Fuchsia Fucada wins Miss Drag Waikato

Tue 3 Jun 2008 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Hamilton drag mainstay Fuchsia Fucada has taken the title Miss Drag Waikato 2008, thanks to her crowd of supporters, some well-sprinkled glitter, and Britney Spears. Fuchsia Fucada Hamilton's Shine nightclub was full to capacity on Saturday night, with five diva entertainers entered into the contest, working their lip-syncing skills for a chance at the title, tiara and sash. Fuchsia Fucada's Britney Spears' inspired number impressed the crowd, who voted for her to win. The runner up was Crystal Meth with her camp medley. "It was wonderful, I had such a good time," says Fucada today. "It was terribly unexpected to win, but very lovely." It was Fucada's first appearance in a drag competition, but she's been appearing on the Hamilton scene for several years now. "It's a lot of fun, and is escapism from reality for me," she explains. "I'm able to put on a different personality for the event - but it is always a lovely personality though," she laughs. "It's about getting to know and be close to all your drag sisters. To me, the event on Saturday wasn't a competition - it was just a chance to prance about on stage, be fairies and have fun." The event's MC Lousia Vuitton said the evening was a fantastic success for the nightclub, with shows from the five Miss Drag Waikato contestants, along with entertainment from Britlee Spearme, Vuduar Cologne, Symphony Damned, Transaction and Sister Sledge. "The performances from the girls where outstanding," she enthuses. "It really showed a lot of time and effort had been put in to preparing. "Congratulations to Fuchsia Fucada, who has been on the scene for a long time entertaining. She most certainly deserves the crown!"
