A 12 year old Australian girl has started hormone therapy in the first stage of treatment to change her sex. A judge has approved the use of hormone implants to stop the development of her breasts and hips. Faced with the onset of puberty and periods the girl had threatened to harm herself, but a close family member says the girl's mother had brainwashed her daughter for years, claiming she would have preferred a son. The girl's father has opposed the treatment, which is reversible in its early stages. Further court approval will be required as the gender change therapy progresses past various stages. When she reaches 16 she will be able to apply for testosterone treatment which will mimic the onset of male puberty. In the meantime she can now apply for a passport in a boy's name.
