A total of 1,200 people celebrated Christchurch Pride 2008, attending over 30 different events between 10 and 18 May, organizers say. A family-orientated gathering opened Pride Week with a picnic in Hagley Park on a beautiful autumn day, followed that evening by the world premiere of the film Through Rainbow Coloured Glasses. Over 350 people watched thirty years of queer history recounted on the big screen, with film makers Big Girls Blouse Productions receiving a standing ovation. Throughout the week, a wide cross section of LGBT groups hosted events, gaining new members through the promotion of their services. "It was fantastic to hear stories of people making contact with these community groups. It's what the week is all about," said Pride Week organiser Hamish Milne of the New Zealand AIDS Foundation. "We had lots of really positive exposure for the GLBTT community in Christchurch, which helps foster a supportive social environment, particularly for those who have recently come out." Events were hosted by Zinc and Flamingo Bars in the Civic complex, including the Mr and Ms Pride pageant, won this year by Paul Rutherford and Renee Mannering. Prize money was presented by Neil Denney, General Manager of OutlineNZ, a free confidential telephone counselling service. The 25th anniversary AIDS Candlelight Memorial at the Great Hall at the Christchurch Arts Centre ended the week on Sunday 18 May, with attendance up on recent years.
