Same sex couples should be able to enter into legally recognised agreements for insurance and other purposes, says US Republican candidate for the presidency, John McCain, but he disagrees with legal marriage for same sex couples. The relatively liberal Republican candidate was grilled by lesbian talkshow host Ellen DeGeneris on her show this week. He said he opposes an amendment to the US constitution which would ban same sex unions, instead believing that legal recognition of partnerships should be allowed. McCain has also rejected the endorsement of an influential televangelist who preaches homophobic views. John Hagee, who has a congregation in the tens of thousands and also reaches a large TV audience, has said that the Hurricane Katrina disaster was God's retribution for homosexual sin.
