2008 gay TV show still not decided

Fri 23 May 2008 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

The funder and channel which traditionally facilitate New Zealand's gay TV programmes are unable to confirm whether there'll be a regular show for the LGBT community on screen this year. This time last year, filming for TV2's LGBT-themed show The Outlook was well underway, but that show's producer, Glenn Sims, has told GayNZ.com that this year his crew is too busy on other projects to produce more than their one-off Sydney Mardi Gras documentary, planned for transmission on TV2 this spring. Sims production company has therefore not applied for NZ On Air funding for a second series of The Outlook. Asked whether other local television producers had yet been invited to apply for NZ On Air funding support for a programme in 2008, NZ on Air's Television Manager Glenn Usmar says "LGBT themed programmes are part of a broader discussion around special interest programmes that NZ On Air is currently having with TVNZ... Until we have concluded these discussions we can't advise what the outcome is." NZ On Air recently contributed further funds towards the long-running LGBT series Takataapui on Maori Television, and Usmar says the funding agency is still committed to provided broadcast content involving gay New Zealanders. "NZ On Air provides for special interest audiences in a variety of ways, from specific series to ensuring general programmes include a broad representation of New Zealanders. We also try to balance off-peak [late-night and daytime] programme funding with prime-time," he said. TVNZ programmer Jude Callen says she appreciates the gay community's interest in LGBT television, however could not reveal any plans. "Given the competitive environment we are in we are not able to answer questions about our future schedule," she said.
