Out Takes chooses two films for June

Mon 19 May 2008 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

There's no full Out Takes LGBT Film Festival this year, but festival organisers say they've picked two of the best films - one gay, one lesbian - to feature at fundraising screenings in Auckland and Wellington next month. Out at the Wedding is a lesbian-themed comedy cocktail with a splash of southern comfort and a twist, from the maker of Girl Play! East-Side Story is a sexy gay romance involving a barely closeted waiter in a homophobic, racially defensive neighbourhood of East LA, and the many obstacles that stand the way of having a happy life with his boyfriend. Out at the Wedding will screen at Wellington's Paramount Cinema on Thursday 12 June, and Auckland's Academy Cinema on Wednesday 18 June. East-Side Story will play at the Paramount on Sunday 15 June and Academy on Wednesday 25 June. $20 tickets will get cinema-goers into the film, along with a complimentary drink and nibbles on arrival, a goodie bag, and a chance at winning prizes at each screening event. "Despite our best efforts, the all-volunteer Reel Queer team are not in a financial position to run a full queer film programme in 2008 due to the upfront operational costs required to produce the film festival," explains the Reel Queer team in a statement. "We have decided instead to focus our efforts on holding one-off screenings throughout 2008 to help raise the $30,000 that is required to produce the full Out Takes Film Festival in 2009."
