'Supermarket' club will be reborn as 'Envy'

Mon 21 Apr 2008 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

After twenty months' service as a gay and mixed venue, the club downstairs from Family bar at 270 Karangahape Road in Auckland will close this weekend for a complete refurbishment and rebrand. Owner Wayne Clark says the venue will reopen in early May with a new name - Envy - but will remain a predominantly gay clubbing space. Supermarket opened on Saturday 19 August 2006, providing a more sophisticated and mixed atmosphere than the drag shows and colour of the upstairs Family bar. The venue was most popular after midnight on Saturdays for its Got the Beats DJs, and last year hosted a weekly lesbian mixer. The venue's final night open as Supermarket will be this Saturday 26 April.
