AIDS Foundation needs net-savvy newbies

Fri 18 Apr 2008 In: New Zealand Daily News

If you know your way around blogs, Facebook, Bebo, MySpace, YouTube, text messaging, chatrooms and dating websites - and are ready to deal with whatever else is ready to roll out on the internet - then the NZ AIDS Foundation may need your skills for one of three new positions introducing 21st-century ideas to the 23-year-old organisation. The NZAF's newly-created Technology Communications Advisor role aims to significantly strengthen the Foundation's understanding of technology and the opportunities available to improve their communications impact with the communities they need to connect with, explains newly-appointed HIV Prevention Manager Simon Harger-Forde. "One example of work that the new advisor may spend time on is advising campaigns and health promoters on ways they could use online chat/dating forums to connect with men," he says. "Another key element of the job is to redevelop our 'corporate website [nzaf.org.nz] and consider the 'fit' of the many other campaign websites we have to our key messages and communications strategy." The NZAF is also advertising for a new National Communications Co-ordinator who'll work closely with a variety of LGBT and mainstream media outlets in promoting the Foundation's important work and messages. A third vacancy represents a significant step forward in the NZAF's work with Auckland's LGBT youth advocacy and support network Rainbow Youth. After running with only one full-time staff member for several years, extra funding found for the Out There! project means another staffer can be added. Out There! is fully funded by the Community Based Youth Development Fund, administered by the Department of Internal Affairs as a youth suicide prevention initiative. "Discussions with the Department took place two years ago to look at a Maori specific element of the Out There! programme," Harger-Forde now reveals. "This was supported, and we received extra funding for some additional staff time. For various reasons we have had trouble recruiting, but have proceeded on a 'project by project' basis. This has also led to an underspend, which means we can now afford a fixed-term, full time position - which I am confident will attract a high quality candidate." The focus of the new Out There! role is to run specific initiatives focused on Taiohi Maori that help reducing youth risk factors - like homophobia in schools, families and communities - for Taiohi Takataapui - young gay, lesbian, transgender or bisexual Maori - bypromoting positive, safe environments; and celebrating Taiohi Takataapui. A key element of this task will be to involve young people at all steps of the work, says Harger-Forde. More details, complete job descriptions and application forms for all three job vacancies are available to download for the NZAF's website, linked below.
