Australian legend and Olympic medalist Dawn Fraser has announced that she will not attend the Beijing Olympic Games because of the Chinese government's lack of respect for women and its treatment of Tibetan monks. Fraser, a lesbian whose swimming career in the late 1950s and '60s saw her hold numerous world titles as well as win eight Olympic medals, four of them gold, says China's actions in Tibet have been "horrific and cruel." And "they have no respect for the disabled or for women," she says, based on her observations on several past visits to China. Although Fraser is choosing not to attend the Beijing games, the first time in several decades she has not attended the Olympics, she says she is not calling on athletes to also stay away.
