'Out' at school, and now on internet radio

Mon 7 Apr 2008 In: New Zealand Daily News

Gay Line Wellington has launched the first of a ten-part series of interviews with LGBT students about the issues 'out' young people face today. "I first thought I was gay when I was eleven," says 16-year-old Mike in the first interview. "I came out as bisexual to my mates… then I came out as gay. "It was like a huge weight had been lifted." John Mayes of Gay Line Wellington says the aim of the School's Out on Demand series is to provide a resource for young queer people, youth workers, counsellors and teachers to hear more about how young people deal with family, friends and peers' reactions to their 'coming out'. "We hope, through offering diverse stories and experiences, to aid queer youth, increase awareness and contribute to a more tolerant, accepting and empathetic society," he explains. Mike's interview is the first to go online, with Gay Line Wellington aiming to produce at least ten interviews at approximately monthly intervals over a year-long timespan. The first 'School's Out on Demand' interview can be listened to via the link below.
