Competitive gay teams ran Round the Bays

Tue 18 Mar 2008 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Teams from Auckland's Urge bear bar and AltTV's gay talkshow Sparkle on Sunday both succeeded in finishing Sunday's Round the Bays fun run around Auckland's Waitamata Harbour. Triumphant: Team Urge Russell Jeffery from the Urge team was the first to cross the finish line, completing the race in 48 minutes, followed by Mark Cowell and Steven Oates from Team Sparkle. "I wasn't too far behind Russell," Oates insists. "And I honestly ran the whole way. Due to our camp outfits, someone yelled at us that we were 'in the wrong parade!' "I was really surprised how fit I was, and I'm totally enthused to do more races - I want to do the Auckland half-marathon next." Alan Granville and Mark from Team Sparkle rounded out the first five finishers home, and afterwards Urge hosted a BBQ with helpful massaging of tired limbs from Evan Donnelly. "Hopefully next year we can make it an even bigger group taking part and we can rename it Round the Gays," laughs Granville.
