Christchurch LGBT bar Heaven's Above will close this month, mostly due to lack of support for the venue, says the bar manager. Heaven's Above bar to close after 18 months' service to Christchurch "It's been really quiet, and at the end of the day it's a business that needs to make a profit, not lose money," explains manager Terry Kitto. The landlord has put the building, located at 170 Tuam Street, on the market with a price of $55,000. Heaven's Above opened as a gay venue eighteen months ago, and has hosted several popular events, including Bingo fundraisers and 'Lipstick' - a weekly night for transgender people. Kitto says the bar's last night open will be Saturday 29 March, for a Closing Down Party, featuring shows by Debbie and Marlene, Scarlett Fever, Tammy Tuck from Wellington, and others. The Heaven's Above bar staff will do the final show of the night. As for Kitto, he's already planning his next business venture. "I'm actually looking at opening a café. I'm a chef by trade, so I'll work with the food side of hospitality again. "I won't be lost to the gay community completely," he promises. The closure of Heaven's Above means Christchurch's gay bar/nightclub scene now consists of two venues: long-running gay nightclub Cruz, and a recently-opened LGBT-friendly venue called Miss Mole's Flamingo Bar.
