Gay voters increasing Obama support

Sun 2 Mar 2008 In: International News View at Wayback

Speculation is mounting that gays who have long supported Hillary Clinton are shifting their allegiance to her US Decomocratic party presidential rival Barak Obama. Although Clinton scored huge approval when, as USA First Lady, she marched in the 2000 New York Pride Parade, it's the Democratic candidates' positions on same-sex unions which gay political observers in the US say are causing glbt voters to defect to Obama. Clinton and Obama both oppose same-sex marriages but support civil unions. However, it is becoming significant that Obama supports full repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act which Bill Clinton signed under pressure from a Republican-dominated Congress and which prohibits federal recognition of same-sex marriages and permits states to also outlaw them. Clinton supports rolling back only part of that law. In the lead-up to the Texas and Ohio primaries both Clinton and Obama are targeting glbt voters, with advertising messages running in those states' gay and lesbian publications.     Ref: Detroit Free Press
