Urge bears in training for Round the Bays

Thu 28 Feb 2008 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Urge bar co-owner Alan Granville says he's "rounding up the gays for Round the Bays" on Sunday 16 March. "We've got six people in our team so far, and expect more to confirm soon," says the K' Road bear bar boss. Auckland's annual charity fun-run attracts over 60,000 participants each year. The flat course is 8.4km long, following the contours of Auckland's Waitemata harbour, starting downtown on Quay St and finishing on the waterfront at St Heliers Bay. Granville says this is the first time Urge bar has put together a team to participate. "I've never done a run in my life. I got roped into it on a drunken Sunday afternoon BBQ, then suddenly there were texts going around and people signing up," he laughs. Urge's team will wear specially-designed T-Shirts by Ink'd fashion as they make their way around the bays. A BBQ will be organised for after the run, with a masseur provided to sooth the bears' tired muscles. Granville says he'll be well prepared, having been out for practise runs. "I did a 6K run the other day, which went well. "Despite what people may think the average Urge customer is like, we will show we are a pretty fit crowd after all."
