Watching the Watchmen

Tue 19 Feb 2008 In: Comment View at Wayback View at NDHA

New Zealand doesn't seem to have been afflicted with the latest breed of militant fundamentalist nuisances- the Watchmen on the Walls group, from Russia with loathing. Indo-Fijian Satender Singh (26) was attacked by two Slavic-born fundamentalist thugs at Lake Natoma in California, while picnicking with friendly Indian families. He later died from a brain haemorrhage after he was hospitalised. One assailant, Andrey Vick (29) has fled back to Russia, while Alexandr Shevchenko (21) has been charged with hate crime intimidation and interference with victims rights. There has been a spate of hardcore antigay Slavic fundamentalist militancy across the traditionally liberal US West Coast, rooted amongst recent immigrants from Russia, Latvia, the Ukraine and other former Soviet republics. These have led to escalating conflict between this "Watchmen on the Wall" cult, which organises rallies where LGBT counterpicketers are pelted with bags of excrement. They're crude, abusive and equate LGBT citizens with murderers, thieves, adulterers and paedophiles, referring to homosexuality as "sodomy" and "perversion." They came out in force against proposed Californian LGBT education reform bills in 2006. The ringleader is one Scott Lively, former leader of an outfit entitled the Oregon Citizens Alliance, which unsuccessfully tried to repeal Oregon's antidiscrimination law coverage of lesbians and gay men in the early nineties. Lively was fined $US20,000 after assault against one lesbian photojournalist in 1991, and is author of a poisonous tract entitled The Pink Swastika (1995) , alleging that homosexuals ran the Third Reich. Stephen Feinstein of the Center for Holocaust and Genocide at the University of Minnesota has concluded that this work of antigay holocaust revisionism has no mainstream academic credibility. Livelyhas also been known to write for the Christian Reconstructionist Chalcedon Report. Remember, Reconstructionists argue that homosexuality should be a capital offence, and recidivists (sic) should be put to death. However, Lively's extremism doesn't matter to Latvian fundamentalist leader Alexy Ledyaev, of the New Generation Church in Riga, that Baltic nation's capital. New Generation also has satellite churches throughout Eastern Europe, Argentina, Israel and the United States. Like Lively, New Generation believes in Reconstructionism, and Ledyaev preaches inflammatory sermons against LGBT inhabitants of these countries and Muslims. In 2006/7, the cult held two international conferences in Sacramento, California and Washington, and has targeted same-sex marriage, LGBT high school support groups and inclusive textbooks. In 2005, New Generation thugs pelted a Latvian Pride march with eggs, rotten tomatoes and bags of human excrement. In 2006, the right-wing Latvian government banned the next Pride march. According to Latvian MP and New Generation cultist Janis Smits, LGBT Latvians should be put to death (and Smits controls the nation's "human rights" organisation!) In 2006, security forces stood idly by while Igor Maslakovs, another New Generation activist and his "No Pride" thugs attacked lesbians and gay men in Riga. New Zealanders should be vigilant. If these organisations are active in New Zealand amongst recent Slavic immigrants, we need to know. One man is already dead, and these thugs are making life unsafe for LGBT Americans in Portland (Oregon), Sacramento and Seattle (Washington) through their violent antics. Yes, The Pink Swastika is certainly circulating amongst fringe individuals here, according to Google New Zealand. No, there are no branches of the New Generation Church amongst New Zealand Slav immigrants as yet, nor are there translated or otherwise articles from Alexey Ledyaev. Let's insure it doesn't happen here.
