Both tops and bottoms — singers that is — are being sought for the recently formed Wellington Gay Men's Chorus. The core group has been meeting since October last year, and is now looking for additional members to join it for its weekly practice sessions. "Everyone likes to sing — even if it is only in the shower — it's something that comes naturally to us all," says Mark Beehre of the group. "The chorus has given us the opportunity to join together as gay men and enjoy making some amazing music." Beehre says being able to read music is not essential: "What is important is a willingness to relax and enjoy the music. Some of our members have experience in choirs and others do not, some read music, some do not, but together we've made some great progress and some great laughs." The group meets weekly on Thursday evenings for a two hour practice with a professional coach, who has volunteered to assist the group in its formation. Practice sessions are held at a member's home in central Wellington. "We're going to start practising again in mid-February and we're keen to up our numbers so we can achieve the critical mass it needs." Gay men's choruses have a long history, with one of the oldest, the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus, formed 30 years ago.
