NZers can join Sydney's Mardi Gras Parade

Fri 18 Jan 2008 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Sydney's 30th annual Mardi Gras Parade will feature a huge variety of floats from around Australia - with no doubt quite a few performers from New Zealand - but with the deadline for parade entrants looming, organisers are making a final call for Kiwi community groups and entertainers to sign up. Your chance to march? The theme of the 2008 parade on Saturday 1 March is 'Brave New Worlds', with organisers saying the celebratory event will embody three decades of evolution and achievement. "From its origins as a street protest for civil rights in 1978, to an internationally acclaimed, 8,000 strong glittering spectacle in 2007, it has become a symbol of hope and inspiration for the millions of people who live gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgender and queer lifestyles," say the parade team. Awards will be presented to the sexiest, funniest, most creative, best dressed and most outstanding political comment. New Zealand LGBT community groups, non-profit organisations and LGBT businesses, or even just well-known LGBT individuals are invited to become part of the parade. Parade entrants can appear on a float or march on foot. Grants are available if funding is an issue. "The Parade Working Group looks forward to welcoming entrants from New Zealand. We appreciate the special effort you make to be part of this event." Applications for the parade close on 1 February. The 2008 Parade Entry Kit can be downloaded from the link on the official Sydney Mardi Gras website on the link below.
