WGN's best 'fag-hag' will be crowned

Wed 16 Jan 2008 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Wellington's infamous FAG Party is being held again this weekend - but with a twist - a competition which will crown the Capital's best 'fag-hag'. "We're looking for the girl who is the ultimate gay man accessory. She has to be fun, fashionable, a gossip, a shoulder to cry on and, above all, devoted to her fag," says Greig Wilson of SubNine. Crowning Miss Fag-Hag Wellington 2008 will be Wellington's soon-to-be ex-favourite fag-hag, Aira Ani. Aira was New Zealand's most well-known hag thanks to her regular column on the subject in Wellington-based gay UP Magazine, which folded in 2005. "I'm looking forward to helping with the search for the next-best-thing," Aira enthuses. "So step up to the mark, girls! I'll see you all this Saturday!" The winner takes away a goodie-bag of gorgeous prizes including DVDs, CDs, a crown and $100 worth of free drinks on the night — enough to share with her favourite gay guy. The FAG Party will be held this Saturday in SubNine's main bar from 9pm until "very late". Crowning of Miss Fag-Hag Wellington 2008 will begin on stage at 1am. Girls need to express their interest at entering to the event organisers at the venue from midnight. The name 'FAG Party' has proven controversial with the users of GayNZ.com's Forum. Debate over whether or not use of the word 'Fag' to promote an event is offensive to gay people has created one of the longest and most popular discussion threads ever. GayNZ.com now also has a poll on the subject on the bottom right-hand-side of our front page, providing readers another opportunity to give their views.
