AKL: Police crackdown on male toilet sex

Tue 15 Jan 2008 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Auckland police have become concerned about male sexual activity in public toilets around the city, and say they're taking action. Howick Police are monitoring public toilet blocks in Howick Beach, Mellons Bay and on the corner of Moore Street and Fencible Drive. GayNZ.com has also learned the police are operating in Western Springs, Herne Bay, Queen Street and several other central city locations to deter sexual behaviour in toilets. Howick Police Youth and Community Services sergeant Keith Olsen told the Eastern Courier last week that their have been up to two reports a day recently of men sitting outside toilets for hours and spending extended amounts of time in the cubicles. A peeping hole had been cut out of a panel connecting two cubicles in Howick's Moore Street toilet block, which has now been covered up by Manukau City Council. A variety of men had been sighted entering the toilet in pairs and leaving an hour later. Olson says what happens "behind closed doors" in a toilet cubicle is not their business, but the personal safety of other members of the public is "of paramount concern".
