Unlikely US anti-discrimination pioneer dies

Tue 15 Jan 2008 In: International News View at Wayback

The conservative governor who signed in the USA's first legislation outlawing anti-gay discrimination, in 1982, has died aged 81. Wisconsin Governor Lee Sherman Dreyfus, a staunch Republican, former naval officer and college chancellor, signed the legislation prohibiting discrimination in housing, employment and public accommodations in his state. Dreyfus justified his ascent to the legislation saying there is "nothing more private or intimate than who you live with and who you love." He insisted that not intruding on people's private lives was a core Republican virtue.
