It was a London stage play, then a movie, and now gay teenage love story Beautiful Thing will be on stage at Auckland Music Theatre during this year's HERO Festival. Set in a London housing estate with a backdrop of Mama Cass songs, the play's story shows teenager Jamie - who lives with his solo Mum Sandra - falling in love with sporty neighbour Ste, who's looking for a way out from his abusive father. Beautiful Thing was filmed in London in 1995 to acclaim from LGBT communities across the globe. It was one of the first films to show a realistic gay romance between two teenagers. The Auckland production will be directed by well-known gay performer Richard Neame. "Love can be found in the most unlikely places - right under your nose," says the production's manager Craig Rodgers. He hopes this colourful and humorous play will lift audiences up "and give you hope that love does exist and can come to everyone, if you want it to. "Beautiful Thing is for those who have ever been in love." The production will be on stage at Auckland Music Theatre, MOTAT 2, Motions Road, Western Springs, from 14-22 February 2008.
