Wigs on the Waterfront "is not dead"

It won't be part of the HERO Festival, and it won't raise funds for its usual charity, but the organiser of Auckland's popular annual Wigs on the Waterfront day of drag shows says the event will return - and the search is on for another worthy cause to support. Wigs returns: Wayne Nicholas with Miss Gloriousole "I have often been asked why Wigs has been cancelled," says organiser Wayne Nicholas. "This misunderstanding appears to have come about from the fact that The Cartier Trust has chosen not to be part of this years event, and that Wigs is not part of the HERO Festival this year." "We were not able to be part of this year's HERO due to fact that the venue was not available at that time," explains Nicholas. "The Buskers Festival was given the sole use of the Viaduct Harbour and they did not wish to accommodate Wigs this year". The official date for 2008's "Wigs on the Waterfront" is Sunday 16 March, and Nicholas is sure there's still strong support from artists, sponsors, and Viaduct area businesses for the event to be held. Donations at February 2007's Wigs on the Waterfront raised over $4,400 for the Cartier Bereavement Charitable Trust - money to be used for funeral costs for those who die from HIV and AIDS-related illnesses - and this year, there's an opportunity for another community group to benefit from fundraising at the event. Representatives from community groups interested in partnering with Wigs on the Waterfront can contact Wayne Nicholas at wayne.wains@clear.net.nz or on 021 962 147.
