UK: Builder guilty of harassing gay teen

Thu 10 Jan 2008 In: International News View at Wayback

A man who waged a campaign of abuse against a 17-year-old boy has been convicted of harassment by a court in Wales. 42-year-old builder Douglas Inskip, of Brynford, Wales, was bailed by Flintshire magistrates awaiting a pre-sentence report. The father of four tried to claim to police that he did not know the word 'faggot' was an abusive term and claimed in court that the 17-year-old made the whole thing up. Magistrates said the defendant had demonstrated hostility to the victim because of his sexual orientation, had disregarded an initial warning, had been on bail during part of the harassment period, and that his actions had been intentional, according to the Daily Post. In a series of incidents from July to September, Inskip called his victim a 'faggot,' shouted other abuse, wolf-whistled and blew kisses at his victim. Magistrates heard that the teenager, who cannot be named because of a court order, became upset and intimidated at the abuse, and considered suicide. "I don't think he approves of gays," he said. Inksip's bail conditions stipulate that he is not to approach his victim or the boy's family.
