Wellington's recent FAG Party - held to 'fill the void' since Imerst nightclub closed - was such a success that organisers are bringing back the event for the next two weekends. Imerst closed in late December leaving the capital with no specifically-LGBT venues. "The night was huge," says Greig Wilson of FAG venue SubNine. "So obviously there is a huge need for the local gay guys to go on a regular basis. So we’re putting on FAG for at least the next two weekends and possible more, until some other venue opens." Wilson says one of the main pieces of positive feedback was that an absence of drag performances was not missed at all. The FAG Party has made a point of never employing drag queens for performances, he points out. "This isn’t because drag queens aren’t liked or aren’t a valid part of the community," Wilson says. "It is just that drag queens are, arguably, over-represented at queer events in New Zealand and we thought it was time for a change!" But the organisers of FAG have come up with some novel events to run over the next few weeks. "One is FAG HAG," Wilson tells us. "Where we'll crown Wellington's best fag hag! On top of that, fags who bring their hag will get in free!" FAG is held at SubNine, with confirmed dates so far being the 12th and 19th. More will be added depending on developments in Wellington’s gay bar status.
