Hamilton celebrates first Pride Week

Wed 5 Dec 2007 In: New Zealand Daily News

The Waikato LGBT community is celebrating and enjoying the first Hamilton Pride Week this week, and plans are already underway for a second Pride Week in the region next year, says one of the co-organisers. "It's been pretty awesome in general," says Hamilton Gay Men's Health promoter Geoff Rua'ine. The week began with the successful Red Party at Glamz cabaret venue on Saturday night, then Sunday afternoon's Fairy Run around the lake proved popular. Last night's Queer Book Club event featuring writers Jessica Hutchings and Peter Wells was well attended and interesting, says Rua'ine. Tonight's showing of camp classic movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Victoria Cinema has sold out. Unfortunately some events for later this week - the Queer as Karaoke night, Blokes masculinity event and Next Door Bar's Xmas Party - have each been cancelled at the last minute. The weekend's key events still include the Lesbian Quiz Night on Friday, a tramp up Mount Pirongia on Saturday, and the Gordontown Picnic Day on Sunday. Hamiltonians can tune into Community Radio's new Flat Out Pride gay radio show - 106.7FM in Hamilton City, 1206AM in the Waikato region - on Friday at 11:30am to get an update on Pride Week happenings. Saturday night's Silver Christmas Party in Hamilton's Shine nightclub will feature spectacular yuletide shows at 12.30am and 1.30am, as well as giveaways for silver-themed costumes and copies of Kylie Minogue's newly-released album to be won. "For our first attempt at a community Pride Week, it's been going very well," says Rua'ine. "Already we're looking at what sort of things we can improve for next year."
