Wellington boys trash a transwoman

Tue 4 Dec 2007 In: Worth Checking Out View at NDHA

Some young guys from Wellington posted a vile YouTube video yesterday of a 'big laugh' they had when they were out on the town.  When a bag of rubbish was thrown at a transgender woman, they captured her reaction on camera and uploaded it onto the net. The video description reads: "Tranny in Welly: Me and Rob out on the town stumble across the biggest laugh I've had in ages." Thanks to the readers who alerted us to this footage. One email to us simply said: "You may be interested in posting this to shame the people for making this video." Not surprisingly, a large number of people have already commented on the video via YouTube, expressing their outrage: "You post this video and think it is funny. You encourage transphobia, hatred, and violence. You should be ashamed." "Stop committing acts of violence. Trans folks aren't here for your amusement, entertainment, as your scape goats or your objects. We are people, you can't make us go away. Get over it." "You guys are repulsive examples of the human race. I don't usually wish ill will against others, but I do hope you get your comeuppance - twicefold and then some." "It's people like this (the antagonizers) that make me afraid to walk home alone." The vid has also turned up on a couple of Amercian gay blogs overnight (how embarrassing for New Zealand!), where a couple of viewers took different views: "I would love to express my outrage and hurt after watching that, but she was already making a spectacle of herself with the way she was dressed. Sadly, when most people picture trans persons, this is what they see; inappropriate, oversexualized clothing two sizes too small. Would a genetic woman in the same attire have been treated the same way? Probably not, but there definitely would have been catcalls and disapproving stares." "There is NOT enough information on this tape for us to decided one way or another. we don't know if it's a drunk drag queen making a scene on the street… we don't know if it's a legitimate tranny trying to get home… we don't know if the it was unprovoked or not." The video is shown below, and we invite your thoughts on it via GayNZ.com's forum. UPDATE 7 DEC: A video response has been uploaded from a young and prominent NZ user of YouTube - watch it here.
