Wellington drag troupe salutes Spice Girls

Thu 29 Nov 2007 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

The Spice Girls may have reformed but they're leaving New Zealand off their world tour, so a Wellington drag troupe say they're offering the next best thing. Spot the difference: The Spice Girls (left) and The Glamazons (right) The Glamazons' Natasha Crowe will become Sporty Spice, La Toya Jacksin will be Ginger Spice, Ellie Kat becomes Baby and Victoria takes on Posh Spice, and special guest Arabia — Miss Drag Wellington 2006 — will complete the set as Scary Spice, for a one-off Glamazons in Spice World night at Imerst nightclub on 8 December 2007. The girls are promising a huge show with the club turning into a major concert venue with performances at 12.30am, 1.15am and a big finale at 2.00am. "We were all gutted the Spice Girls left New Zealand off their world tour, so thought why not do our own Spice Girls concert?" says La Toya Jacksin. "After all, they'll probably just mime like we do!" The drag troupe says they're working hard to produce their trademark top-of-the-line music videos to project behind them during their performance, many of which have become hits on YouTube.com. "We're always blown away by the popularity of the videos, but it means that each one we try and take it up a notch, and the SpiceWorld show is no exception," adds Natasha Crowe. Promising stunning costumes, innovative choreography, platform shoes, a comprehensive set-list and great prizes up for grabs, The Glamazons in Spice World is at Imerst from 10pm on Saturday 8 December. The Glamazons' teaser video for the night is shown below.
