Frustrations at the frontier of gay media

Fri 10 Dec 2004 In: Features

The internet is still a growing medium, in both a technical and content sense, and GayNZ.com is likewise growing and developing, pushing at the frontiers of gay media in New Zealand with limited resources. Recently it became clear the complex GayNZ.com site had outgrown our previous server company's ability to host and service us and we moved to a new company. Moving our large database-driven site was never going to be a matter of just throwing the contents onto a disk and taking them down the road. Moving to a bigger, better-resourced provider has meant changing many technical formats, reinventing parts of the site to suit different server protocols, and hundreds of hours of unpaid work by the tiny team of mostly volunteers who contribute to GayNZ.com and make it a viable and important resource for the NZ LGBT community. Most of the changeover went without a hitch and most of the few glitches that became quickly apparent were fixed just as quickly, often in the wee hours of the morning between work and daily life commitments. Two frustratingly difficult faults remain. They are intermittent and not even the team of experts at our server company has yet been able to put their fingers on the problems. So the entry to our personals is a little touchy and occasionally something cloggs up the access system which draws diverse elements from our databases and lays them out for your browser to show. Last night's freeze of GayNZ.com, thawed out this morning, was a result of this hard to find glitch and was exacerbated by the huge numbers of users accessing us because of our Civil Unions coverage and our exclusive breaking news revelations about the anti-gay actions of Auckland's new mayor. Our slightly tired little team and the experts at the server company are working to locate and fix the remaining couple of problems but it's a frustrating job... GayNZ.com, despite moving to a larger mainstream server company, is one of the most complex sites based on that server (actually, we're spread over two servers - and one of them is brand new). It's a steep learning curve for us all, but we are committed to providing the best and most up to date gay media and resource in New Zealand and hope you'll bear with us as we struggle a little while pushing at the frontiers of technology and resources.
