'Wigs' up in the air as charity pulls out

Mon 5 Nov 2007 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Since 2001, the Wigs on the Waterfront day of drag entertainers downtown at Auckland's Viaduct has raised thousands of dollars annually for worthy charity the Cartier Bereavement Charitable Trust - but now Cartier's Trustees say they're pulling out of the event. Family fun at Wigs on the Waterfront 2007 The future of Wigs is also uncertain as the date required in the opening week of next year's HERO Festival - Sunday 3 February 2008 - clashes with Buskers' Festival Week, so another date must be set if the event is to go ahead next year at the Viaduct. Last February, volunteers with plastic buckets collected $4,405.80 for the Cartier Trust at Wigs, money to be used for funeral costs for those who die from HIV and AIDS-related illnesses. "We would like to inform the community that Cartier has pulled out of Wigs on the Waterfront," say Cartier Trustees Karen Ritchie, Jonathan Thompson and Damien Moore in a press statement. Another annual Cartier fundraiser - Wigarama 2008 - will still be happening at Family bar, and regular Bingo nights at Caluzzi cabaret bar will also continue to raise money for the Trust. The Cartier team say they are now looking for a place to hold their main annual event for 2009. "Because of the wonderful support that you all bring to Cartier Trust we look forward to your continued input with Wigarama 2008 and future events to follow," they say. "This is a wonderful cause and it will continue." Wigs on the Waterfront organiser Wayne Nicholas says he has no comment to make at this stage, except to confirm difficulty with getting the event date to be part of the Hero Festival in February. "There are some issues to be resolved. We'll keep you informed," he says. In its Press Statement, the Cartier Trust expressed thanks and gratitude to Wayne Nicholas for his assistance in organising Wigs events over the years.
