25th Chch Oscars made the Civic sparkle

Sat 27 Oct 2007 In: New Zealand Daily News

With so many guest performers from around NZ - and several Christchurch favourites also strutting their stuff on stage - it's no wonder the 25th Annual Chch Oscars Celebration ran a little over time. 'Queen of the Year' Miss Cindy The evening's entertainment finished well after midnight going into Labour Weekend Monday. "The night ran late, and then no-one wanted to leave," laughs Miss Mole. "They all wanted to stay behind after the shows." Guest performers at the Civic Theatre for 2007's Chch Oscars night included Miss Ribena, Daphne Bush, Miss Kola and Miss Kitana from Auckland, Miss Glouriousole from Hamilton, the Wellington Drag Kings Troupe, Amanduh La Whore from Wellington, Christchurch favourite Miss Beverly Hills and many more. The night was a profitable one for several entertainers and community-minded people who won Oscars statues for their positive impact on LGBT Christchurch in the past year. The New Zealand AIDS Foundation's South Island Health Promoter Brent Mitchell was one of three recipients of a lifetime achievement award for work in the community, as he leaves his role in November after three years work organising Chch Pride Weeks and several other LGBT events around the South Island. As befits the glamorous occasion, Mitchell accepted the award in full drag, topped with a bright red wig. Heaven's Above bar's resident drag diva Miss Cindy was awarded 'Queen of the Year', and Miss Ginger was 'Bitch of the Year'. Other awards handed out included Mr. Hunky Spunk, Sexiest Woman, Business and Hospitality awards, and community icons. The event was captured on film for Through Rainbow Coloured Glasses, a documentary about Christchurch's LGBT history to be completed next year. Two successful after-Oscars parties were held - one at Cruz nightclub, the other at Heaven's Above bar, continuing until the sun rose on Labour Day holiday Monday morning. Miss Mole has previously said 2007's 25th Oscars will be her last, and she now confirms: "25 years is enough. I'm going on to other things."     Ref: GayNZ.com (m)
