Rainbow Wellington has announced funds from its community grants scheme will underwrite the costs of a recent conference on Domestic Violence in Same Sex Relationships. “Although we organise a full social programme for our members, there is a more serious side to our work also,” said Rainbow Wellington's chair Tony Simpson in announcing the grant. “Organisations such as the Women's Refuge Collective, which appreciate and work with LGBT people in its activities and in the communities in which they are active, fully deserve our support and encouragement. We see it as a part of our role to offer practical support and encouragement." The conference - held in Kaikoura earlier this month under the auspices of the National Collective of Independent Women's Refuges - explored the dynamics around same sex violence, and addressed how to work safely with, and for, lesbian women and their children when they come into refuges. The twenty-three women involved in the conference set themselves the task of identifying possible barriers to same sex couples and ensuring that they are able to feel comfortable and safe in accessing refuges. The conference's findings will be shared with other government and non-government organisations which work collaboratively with the Collective on domestic violence. Ref: Rainbow Wellington (m)
