Taupo hui to plan Lesbian Elders Villages

Wed 10 Oct 2007 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Meetings around New Zealand to gauge support for a nationwide network of Elders Villages for lesbians have been encouraging - so the next step is to get everyone together for a hui in the new year. "We're carrying on with meetings and creating an organisational structure. There has been a lot of interest so far," says organiser Arafelle Oné. Oné envisages the Elders Villages to be on large piece of land with many different sorts of accommodation and facilities available – from units for one, couples or more living together, a rest home area for the care of the older and less able, a secure area for those with dementia, and a total hospital care and hospice wing for those who need it. Community areas might include a communal kitchen and dining area, gardens and orchards for organic food and flowers, a swimming pool and gym, natural health clinic, massage room, arts and craft work spaces, a music room, and even a golf course nearby. "We'd kind to let any lesbians interested in the project to join us at our 'Lesbian Elders Village Hui' in Taupo in January," she says, explaining that the event will be a chance for networks around New Zealand to meet, discuss progress, share information, and have fun in a beautiful part of the world.
