Alternative new gay clubbing for Auckland

Mon 8 Oct 2007 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Karangahape Road will soon be home to a new regular gay clubbing night - with an emphasis on music you don't normally hear at other gay venues and dance parties. Sohomo's flyer Paul Phillips, co-organiser of Auckland's new fortnightly event called Sohomo says the music will be a mix of indie, pop, electro, and rock. "Our music isn't going to be commercial - it's going to have an indie rock edge to it, which other places don't have. It's alternative, but still quite easy for people to get into," Phillips explains. The organisers have started promoting the event on MySpace.com, and are expecting a young and mixed crowd ranging in age from 18 to around 30. "There are lots of people who don't normally go out into the gay world because they don't feel like they connect with any of it," says Phillips. "We want people who don't really go out to gay bars to come to us." The Rising Sun venue at 373 K' Road will host the new night. Sohomo's initial opening party will be on Friday 26 October, then the night will take place fortnightly on Thursday beginning 8 November. More details on the new night will be available on GayNZ.com's events diary, and on Sohomo's MySpace page on the link below.     Ref: GayNZ.com (m)
