Dance party 50th for AKL lesbian socialite

Thu 13 Sep 2007 In: New Zealand Daily News

One of Auckland's best-known lesbian socialites is turning 50 with a massive dance party at Galatos this Saturday night - featuring her favourite DJ's and several drag diva appearances. Anne Speir's birthday invite Turning 50 is actually quite scary," Anne Speir admits. "It's a significant age, head-wise. For women it's menopausal - for men it's just pausal," she jokes. "At 50, you're either supposed to have sorted your life out, or you're f**ked!" Speir, a documentary-maker and former chairperson of the Hero Festival Trust, will celebrate her big 5-0 with a 'Sprung' party featuring DJ's Alex Taylor, James Lauii and Mauri. On stage will be Buckwheat, DeeZaStar, Tess Tickle, Bambi Slut, Venus Mantrap, Fonda Boyz, Felisha Pourgette, Davina Douche - and a rare sighting of Speir's comedy alter-ego Dolores. Does Speir feel any wiser as she hits her half-century? "No. But hopefully I won't make some of the mistakes I made in my youth. "Only recently I've really thought about that saying 'youth is wasted on the young'. It's actually really true. But you can't tell the young ones how to do something - they've got to discover how to do it for themselves. Just like you can't teach an old dog new tricks!" Speir plans to keep going out regularly on the local LGBT scene for some time yet. "If you see me with my Zimmer-frame at a dance party when I'm 70, tell them not to kick me."     Ref: GayNZ.com (m)
