A 37-year-old man was arrested and will appear in court for allegedly making prank calls which caused Family nightclub to be evacuated last night. The 111 Northern Communications Call Centre received a call at 10:55pm from a phone box on the corner of Pitt Street and Karangahape Road. The caller said "that he'd put a bomb into Family Bar on K' Road" confirms an Auckland Central police spokesperson. "Then at three minutes past eleven, another call came through, saying there were people fighting outside that bar. And then at 16 minutes past eleven there was another call saying there was a body in a bag inside a car, and the caller gave the location and registration number of the alleged vehicle involved." A busy party night at Family bar was disrupted when a team of police officers ordered the venue to be evacuated and searched, "but there were no suspicious packages found. "There was also no fight, and we don't believe there was ever a body in a bag in a car." A person who police believe to be the caller was located shortly afterwards outside the 24/7 club on K' Road. "There is a rumour that this was a malicious anti-gay incident, but that's unlikely," says the spokesperson. It's believed the caller had been refused entry into Family nightclub earlier that night. The 37-year-old male suspect was arrested and bailed. He is scheduled to appear in court this Thursday on three charges of misuse of a telephone. Ref: GayNZ.com (m)
