The man who gave the Auckland gay scene 'Flesh' nightclub and Hamilton's Victoria Street 'Venom' club died suddenly yesterday of a heart attack. Nicholas Morgan, 60, had battled illness for several months, says Venom's bar manager Richard Legge. Funeral arrangements will be finalised later today -- the public funeral is likely to be held in Hamilton this Friday, before he is taken home to Levin for burial. Morgan's nightclub Flesh was a popular addition to Downtown Auckland's gay scene when it opened in 2001. It was the city's most popular LGBT venue for several years, but after a fire on 27 December 2004, the bar was closed for much of 2005 and the crowds never returned when it eventually reopened. Morgan relocated to Hamilton, and opened Victoria Street venue Venom on 14 December 2006. Legge hopes to keep the successful nightclub open, saying "that's the plan -- it's what Nicholas would have wanted." A picture of Nicholas Morgan is on the link below.
