Rupert Everett: 'Lewd' comment on BBC

Sun 5 Aug 2007 In: International News

Out Hollywood actor Rupert Everett has found himself in hot water after making 'inappropriate' comments of a sexual nature on a live BBC broadcast. Speaking about his youth on BBC One's Breakfast programme, Everett,48, recalled visiting provincial cinemas, and elaborated upon the kind of things that would take place between couples in the back row of the "dark and sexy" theatres. Hosts Suzanna Reid and Charlie Stayt swiftly steered Everett off the risqué topic, reminding the actor that the interview was going out at 9.09am. A YouTube clip of the incident is available to view on the link below. Everett was on the show promoting his autobiography, Red Carpets and Other Banana Skins - and his role as the headmistress in the upcoming modern version of St Trinian's. A BBC spokesman said that regrettably the BBC had no control over what guests said on air, and that the inclusion of "inappropriate" comments "sometimes happens on live broadcasts". The BBC said there were four complaints immediately after the broadcast. Everett, the voice of Prince Charming in Shrek The Third, caused another incident on the BBC last September when he swore on Jonathan Ross's Radio Two programme. In July, the Another Country and My Best Friend's Wedding star, who is currently single, asked a British tabloid newspaper to start a campaign to find him a partner. He also vowed in an interview in the US to be less opinionated and keep his thoughts to himself. His frank and candid book lifts the lid on Hollywood and the actor's friendships with stars including Sharon Stone, Julia Roberts and Madonna.     Ref: Daily Telegraph, YouTube (m)
