Gay couple will join Desperate Housewives

Wed 1 Aug 2007 In: International News

According to Desperate Housewives' openly-gay creator, Wisteria Lane is ready for a resident gay couple. Marc Cherry will introduce a male same-sex couple into next season's episodes of the hit show. The new characters will move into the old Applewhite house and cause more headaches for their neighbour Susan (Terri Hatcher), in a plot line Cherry says is based on his true life experience. He explains, "One of the gay men will just have a fractious, hateful relationship with Susan. And Susan wants to be so politically correct and show how open-minded she is -- she puts her foot in her mouth instantly and it goes downhill from there. "I'm basing it a little bit on my relationship with my neighbours." At this point we don't know who the new additions will be, as he has just started to write them in. Desperate Housewives'' gay teenager Andrew Van de Kamp (Shawn Pyfrom) has had a quieter time last season, after some central storylines in the past. Cherry now indicates Andrew could have a bigger role again in upcoming season four. "I think that he'll have some interesting gay adventures," teases Cherry. "He's had such a tame year, it's time to kind of juice him up again." The actor himself professes to not knowing a thing about his character's future. "You kind of go into blindly not knowing what you are going to be doing," Pyfrom told AfterElton.com. "It would be nice if I could get a nice, hot 19-year-old girl on there that I could fool around with, but you know what? I know they'll choose something great whether he goes bi or not, they'll make it interesting. "Whatever they throw at me, I'm willing to take."     Ref: AfterElton, HollyScoop (m)
