Garnet Milne In an effort to stave off winter chills, hyper-sectarian Garnet Milne has retreated back to the 1640s. When I first began observing the Christian Right, I noticed that its conservative Calvinist segments behaved oddly like Trotskyite marxists on the far left. That is, they tended to fission over minute matters of doctrine and practice, thus reducing their numbers through mutual antipathy, and proving unable to work cohesively with anyone on matters of shared interest. Thus is Garnet Milne. Several months ago, he stomped away from the already quite dire Reformed Church of New Zealand, and decided to become a "Reformed Presbyterian". This tiny sect is opposed to anything since the English Civil War in the 1640s, when a group of conservative Calvinist Scots tried to force their brand of Protestantism on the rest of the British mainland, under the title "Solemn League and Covenant." Basically, this worldview declares that religious pluralism, feminism, women's reproductive choice and (of course) LGBT rights are signs of "despotism", and Labour and National have become mutually indistinguishable. Enough of this. Garnet has turned into a philosophical neutron star- small, dense, and broadcasting large amounts of toxic radiation in the general direction of everyone else that he disagrees with. If I wanted to read about misanthropes, Moliere did it with much more style and panache. Goodbye, Garnet. It's been entertaining at times, but now it's just tiresome.
