The ‘Almost a Bird' Theatre Collective is bringing epic and award-winning play ‘Angels in America' to Wellington's Downstage Theatre from 29th September until 6th October. “Because the play delves into gay sexuality, AIDS/HIV, politics and religion in a very confronting, sophisticated and respectful way, the piece has the potential to be of great importance for various communities in Wellington and New Zealand,” says artistic director Willem Wassenaar. In Angels in America, by Tony Kushner, a moral earthquake has everyone failing to keep their feet steady on a shaking ground. In New York in the conservative mid 1980s, the audience will witness a rollercoaster collision course for a former drag queen diagnosed with AIDS, his arm chair philosopher lover, a Valium addicted housewife, her gay Mormon husband and a heavenly host of Angels. “If God has abandoned his responsibilities and the Angels are calling out for mortal guidance – what can our characters do but make their own decisions on freedom, sexuality, politics and religion. “The universe is about to change, but in which direction?” Angels in America at the Downstage Theatre is a coproduction with Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School and part of the graduation season of the national drama school. You can become a supporter of Angels in America by donating a minimum of $500 to the production, says Wassenaar. “By providing a donation, you help develop the next generation of artists and audiences. All donations play a crucial role in supporting the collective's work with New Zealand's finest talent and future generation of theatre makers. By donating an amount you will be mentioned within the program and on our website as part of our Angel sponsoring network. Also you will get two free tickets to the show - normal ticket price $39 - and an opportunity to meet the cast and director of Angels in America.” Almost a Bird Theatre Collective can be contacted via email at wassenaarwillem@hotmail.com.
