Mon 16 Jul 2007 In: New Zealand Daily News

12:30AM: Thirteen gay Aucklanders competed on the Family bar stage tonight for the Mr. Gay Auckland 2007 title – with German-born Hannes Eilers, 34, taking out the coveted title. A large crowd gathered at the K' Road LGBT venue for the contest which included a brief introduction, a formal wear and question round, swimwear show, and revealing underwear round. Eilers received $1,000, a trip on next March's Air New Zealand Pink Flight to Mardi Gras, fashion vouchers from DJ Station and Ink'd Underwear, and a dinner for two at Caluzzi. Runner-up Tama Paorira, 20, won $500 cash and several goodies. Hostess Miss Ribena said the standard of contestants was particularly high this year. "All the guys made a big effort, and some of the costumes and organisation by the entrants was outstanding. They all had supporters there cheering them on. "There were so many on that stage who deserved to win. We gave a few special prizes away on the night to deserving people." The new Mr Gay Auckland has lived in New Zealand for three years, and wowed the judges with his looks, clothes and props - which included a big German sausage (which co-host Miss Ford stuck in between her breasts). His long-term boyfriend Shannon also competed in the pageant.
